Jose Mourinho will be pretty satisfied with his first full season in charge of Manchester United as he managed to win the League Cup and the Europa League, securing Champions League football for next season.
However, the Red Devils were way off the pace in the Premier League as they finished in sixth place, a whooping 24 points behind league champions Chelsea.
United have only finished in the top four once since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club in 2013 but this is a club that must be challenging for the title every season especially with the amount of money at their disposal.
Here, This is Futbol takes a look at three areas where Mourinho’s can improve in order to secure their first Premier League title in four years.
Goals
United have seriously struggled to find the back of the net over the last couple of seasons with Mourinho and former boss Louis van Gaal at the helm.
The Manchester giants have failed to score 50 goals or more in the Premier League for the last two seasons.
This figure would have been much lower had it not been for the fantastic contribution from summer signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic who scored 28 goals in all competitions.
United have been heavily linked with a host of strikers this summer and a new face up front is absolutely essential if they want to become genuine title contenders next season.
Home form
Old Trafford has traditionally been a venue where the opposition teams are delighted when they leave the ground with a point in the bag.
However, it was United who had to settle with a point at home last season as they recorded 10 draws at Old Trafford in the Premier League – the second time in the club’s history where they had reached double figures for league draws on home soil.
It is true that there were several occasions where United deserved more out of the game but this lack of clinical finishing turned out to be the main reason why they failed to finish in the top four let alone mount a challenge for the title.
Mourinho has to turn Old Trafford back into a fortress and he needs to rediscover his magic touch from his early days at Stamford Bridge where he did not lose a Premier League match at home for almost four years.
Central midfield
Despite not being able to stick the ball in the back of the net, United have recently become a much more solid defensive unit, only conceding 64 league goals over the past two seasons.
The goalkeeper and defence provide the team with stability but United seriously lack authority in the middle of the park.
Summer recruit Paul Pogba tried to stamp his mark on the game but he struggled on numerous occasions in the league last season with Belgian Marouane Fellaini proving to be more of a battering ram than someone who could help dictate play and create chances for his teammates.
Michael Carrick is coming to the end of his career so he will not be able to have the same influence on the side as he has done in the past, so United need to focus on signing a midfielder in the summer who could provide the team with balance and also occasionally contribute with some goals.
